Artist Biography
Moto Buu is a Malawian Rock band, the only one of its kind. Moto Buu's trademark is Chichewa rock songs, representing the culture as the only existing Malawian rock band. Besides their own songs, the band also plays numerous English songs, most of them covers from Hard Rock legends such as Nirvana, Metallica or Rage Against the Machine.
In 2006 Zwangie and Kwacha formed the band Moto Buu as a two-man band in which Zwangie played rhythm guitar, Kwacha played bass and both were vocalists. Three months later, Ellis Blue (who was playing in China before) joined as their guitarist. The band participated in the festivals from Music Crossroads as a rock and roll band. In 2008 Alex joined as the drummer (since 2016 Mada), making it a four-man band. Having been invited to several occasions to perform as a rockband, they started recording their own songs as well, ultimately releasing their own EP called Chiwoko Rock. Now the band hopes to take their music to the next level and become a representative for African rock music. They have been taking their first steps towards this goal by performing throughout Lilongwe in places such as Lilongwe Golf Club, Chameleons; The Livingroom, Champions etc.
In 2015, Moto Buu recorded a video for the UK based band Heavyball. The video can be found on youtube or by easily going to our Media page. Ever since, they have started a cooperation, which lead to a licensing agreement which is currently in the making with Magnetic North Melodies; a UK based record label.
In 2016, Moto Buu has started a project whereby they gathered several artists to organize free shows in the ghetto where they all grew up. The first shoy took place at Kaliyeka Ground and was very heavily attended (take a look at the pictures on our picture page). The idea is to organize these shows several times each year to give back to the community they were born and raised in.
Moto Buu is available for private events, as well as spicing up any show together with other artists. Having their own equipment, hiring Moto Buu certainly has more than only musical advantages.
